Zooming In On Management Products
Within the category of ‘management products’ there are three subcategories. You’ll find a management product list grouped according to these categories on the first page of Appendix A in the PRINCE2 manual.
Baseline management products
The baseline management products are ones which will change, or which are highly likely to change, and for which you’ll want to keep earlier versions. The key to remembering this is the word baseline, which is a configuration management (version control) expression. If something is changing, you’re going to need version control to know how and when it’s changed and whether you’ve got the latest version. The Project Plan is included in this category. The Project Plan will definitely change during the project. For a start, things never go exactly to plan, and the plan will need adjusting, but anyway you’re going to want to enter actuals of time and money actually spent in order to do further forecasts. It’s no surprise then to find plan (Project Plan, Stage Plan and Team Plan) on the baseline list.
Records are dynamic products in constant use and being updated with the latest information. However, it’s not the case that you’ll normally want to roll back the product to a previous state. The Daily Log makes a great example here. The Daily Log acts primarily as a diary.
