9.4. 9.4 The Need for Measurement in Parallel Software Design

The main reason for adopting an architectural design approach for parallel software development is to improve software quality. 'Software quality is the degree to which software possesses a desired combination of attributes' [BLK+95] [BKW97] [BCK98]. Software quality must be built in by design and considered from the beginning. Defining an architectural description of software is the earliest stage of parallel software design at which measurements and evaluations can be carried out to obtain an idea of how well the software meets its requirements.

  • Measurement and evaluation. Repeatability is perhaps the most important issue for any design development. It ensures that results (particularly, those considered as 'good' results) can be reproduced. If a parallel software system has specific qualities, it is important to be able to reproduce these in similar software systems. This requires an ability to measure those qualities, evaluating them to confirm their presence or absence in other software systems.

In parallel software design, software quality means that parallel software systems possess relevant attributes such as performance, low cost, reliability, rapid development, safety and so on [BLK+95] [BKW97]. To determine whether a parallel software development method allows the inclusion or improvement of a quality attribute, we need a way to measure it. Merely stating that such software possesses such an attribute conveys ...
