IN THIS CHAPTER
Considering and evaluating four-year colleges
Understanding what the U.S. military academies have to offer
Contemplating community colleges
Taking time to work or try something else
As I explain in Chapter 1, in recent generations, more and more people go to college after high school. Unfortunately, many colleges have gotten prohibitively expensive and are too often not preparing students for the workforce realities that await them. Furthermore, a surprisingly large percentage of students fail to complete their four-year college degrees.
By all means, most high school students should examine the range of college options available and seek out institutions that provide a quality education at a good price. That said, now more than ever, families should also explore the increasing number of and attractive alternatives to traditional colleges. This chapter and the next one should help you with jump-starting that process.
