The goal of the reconnaissance phase of penetration testing is to gain as much information as possible about a real-world target, such as a company, government, or other group, without actually "touching" the target, and then be able to map the real-world target to a cyberworld target (i.e., to a set of reachable and relevant Internet Protocol addresses).
