Project Manager/Functional Manager Conflict

Project managers and functional managers are partners in the business of making projects succeed. As in all partnerships, there is an opportunity for conflict. Conflict can be healthy and useful if it is candidly addressed and leads to better decisions. Unnecessary conflict, which is often based on misunderstanding of roles, responsibilities, and mutual objectives, should be minimized if not eliminated. Conflict resolution requires both a forum at which to raise, define, and discuss issues and a commitment from senior management, functional managers, and project managers to actually resolve the issues.
