In the Critique of Pure Reason Immanuel Kant says that “concepts without
percepts are empty, percepts without concepts are blind” (1781/1965).
Many studies in Perceptual Dialectology (PD) aim for folk linguistic con-
cepts, but one hopes they are not empty, for they surely involve percep-
tion in some way. Increasingly, PD studies have more directly addressed
perception, but one also hopes they are not blind to the conceptual world.
I want to offer a taxonomy related to percepts and concepts in PD, indi-
cate ways in which they interact, and evaluate long-standing and newer
work in order to suggest how we may go forward in studying ...
