It is critical to collect feedback about the behaviors and perceptions of a new employee, and it is equally important to deliver that feedback so that the new employee can first understand it and then be able to act on. Managers tend to shy away from giving feedback because they fear or dislike conflict or the perceived negative feelings that feedback can produce for the receiver. Our view is that feedback is really a gift. People are thinking and feeling this way, so give the new employee a chance to hear it and then make changes. These changes could in fact be the ones that “save” the employee in his or her new role.
