6.1 Background
Broadband and high-quality wireless communication systems have been standardized recently in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Broadband Radio Access Network (BRAN) [1] and IEEE 802.16 [2]. To realize high-quality broadband wireless communications, the use of automatic repeat request (ARQ) in combination with forward error correction (FEC) is being considered.
