Chapter 16. Enhanced Oil Recovery
Approximately 60–70% of oil reserves cannot be recovered by conventional methods (Al-Khafaji, 1999
), and so enhanced oil recovery methods become increasingly important with respect to the limited worldwide resources of crude oil. The estimated worldwide production from enhanced oil recovery and heavy oil projects at the beginning of 1996 was approximately 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) compared to 1.9 million bpd at the beginning of 1994 (Moritis, 1996
). This is approximately 3.6% of the world's oil production. Some production data by enhanced oil recovery (EOR) are summarized in Table 16.1
