Chapter 13

Acidizing

Abstract

Acidizing, including both matrix acidizing and acid fracturing, is a technique to stimulate wells for improving well inflow performance. In the treatment, acid solution is injected into the formation to dissolve some of the minerals to recover permeability of sandstones (removing skin) or increase permeability of carbonates near the wellbore. This chapter briefly presents chemistry of matrix acidizing and guidelines to acidizing design for both sandstone and carbonate formations. Minerals that are present in sandstone pores include montmorillonite (bentonite), kaolinite, calcite, dolomite, siderite, quartz, albite (sodium feldspar), orthoclase, and others. These minerals can be either from invasion of external fluid ...
