Pipeline Pigging

Abstract

The term pig was originally referred to a Go-Devil scraper driven through the pipeline by the flowing fluid trailing spring-loaded rakes to scrape wax off the internal walls. Another tale about the origin of the name pig is that the rakes made a characteristic loud squealing noise. Pipeline operators commonly use the word pig to describe any device designed to pass through a pipeline for cleaning and other purposes. The process of driving the pig through a pipeline by fluid flow is called a pigging operation.
