4.1 The digitalization of healthcare is progressing

What is infrastructure? Infrastructure is, in simple terms, resources operating within a broader system. According to the dictionary definition, those are “the basic systems and services that are necessary for a country or an organization to run smoothly, for example buildings, transport and water and power supplies”.1 For the considerations in this chapter, such a basic definition is sufficient. Such an infrastructure could, therefore, be the equipment. Or it could be software. It could be people. It is simply a system consisting of various components.
