Many of the images in this book were captured using gray and graduated gray filters.
If you have spent time shooting landscapes in tricky lighting conditions—such as sunrise or sunset—you will be familiar with the problem: either the sky is too bright and the landscape too dark, or vice versa. In other words, the overall contrast in the scene is too great for your camera’s sensor to capture in a single image. You could capture a series of photos exposed individually for the various parts of the scene and then stitch them together using a computer—however, effectively stitching moving elements such as clouds and water is always tricky and often impossible.
