Noise reduction. Not elimination.

Q: WHEN YOU’RE POST-PROCESSING YOUR IMAGES, HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT REDUCING NOISE WHEN NECESSARY?

A: I make it black and white and call it fine art. (I make joke....)

When I’m in a situation where ISO has to go up to a point where noise is going to be an issue, then I start lighting the scene so I can shoot at lower ISOs and have less noise.

However, that’s a perfect-world situation, and with things like street shooting you don’t have those options. In those cases I lightly use Lightroom’s noise reduction. Back in the Lightroom 2 days, the noise reduction seemed useless. It’s as though the slider was there but a programmer forgot to turn it on. It has since been turned on and is getting better with each new version. ...
