Proprietary RAW files often contain
encrypted data, which is potentially
readable only by proprietary software.
Camera companies argue they need
encrypted and copyrighted data to
maintain a competitive advantage, but
what happens when no one dares (or
bothers) to support these numerous
formats? It’s the photographer with
thousands of unreadable files who
potentially suffers.
What about the long-term reliability of
Adobe’s DNG format (Figure 11-1)? Are
you taking a chance converting and
saving your proprietary RAW files in that
format? Again, the honest answer is yes.
Your images are not set in stone and there
is no guarantee DNG will be supported in
the future.
There isn’t anything particularly
complicated or proprietary about the
DNG format. Thomas Knoll, its creator,
based DNG on the venerable and widely
supported TIFF file format. Since it is an
open format—publicly documented—
anyone with coding skills can use or write
to it with ease, without paying royalties.
When faced with an unknown future, I can
see no reason why you shouldn’t hedge
your bets and save both the original RAW
file and a DNG file separately. Assuming
that DNG is the best hope of ensuring
future accessibility to our images, let’s move
on to creating and saving DNG files (Figure
11-2).
