The first rule of working with any computer software is to save your work often. (The second rule is to back up your data regularly, but I'm sure you already knew that.) We've all lost data due to a software or hardware crash — or at least seen someone go through it — and it's not pretty. In this chapter you'll learn about the ins and outs of saving files in Photoshop.

You'll learn about the advantages and disadvantages of formats Photoshop is capable of saving to, including the native Photoshop file format (PSD, or Photoshop Document) and the advantages it offers. You'll also learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the various file formats, what scenarios to use them in, and how they can provide maximum compatibility when exchanging data with other software packages and devices.
