Back in 1984, a fast-growing company just south of San Francisco introduced a little beige box with a tiny 9-inch monitor that could display and print only black-and-white images and that was incapable of reproducing even remotely convincing photographic images. What it could reproduce was strictly limited to a resolution of 72 pixels per inch. Yet the graphic arts world went nuts over this new computer—Apple’s earliest Macintosh—because bundled in its modest software suite, alongside its stunted word processor, was MacPaint.
