4.9. Reservoir Sedimentation

Reservoir plays an important role in socioeconomic benefits. It stores precipitation or runoff, which is used for various purposes like domestic water supply, irrigation, hydropower development, recreation or combination of these, etc. Hydropower accounts for 21% of the world's electricity output, while storage reservoirs augment the cultivation of 17% of the irrigated area (ICOLD, 1999). However, sedimentation in the catchment and river largely affect the reservoir capacity as well as reservoir operation. Sedimentation induces global reservoir capacity loss at a rate of 1% per annum.
