FGS and mitigation systems are key components in the overall safety and operation of any production facility and its on-site personnel. Unfortunately, it is not understood properly with the overall perspective. However, now performance-based approaches are seen in standards like Annex B of NFPA72. Here, performance-based detectors are considered. Still it is often found that people are satisfied when they achieve (say) SIL3 certification for SIS and are not much bothered about FGS. Is this enough? Actually, consideration must be given to overall safety including FGS maintenance of instruments, etc. to get a proper result.
