Critics of CSR argue that it is not the responsibility of business to solve social problems. They cite the remark
by Milton Friedman that the only social responsibility of business is to make prof ts. They argue that looking
after the welfare of citizens is the responsibility of the state not that of the corporate sector.
This is simply not true in today’s times. Gone are the times when business was only accountable to its
owners/shareholders. Modern corporations are accountable to a multitude of stakeholders as explained in the
f rst chapter of this unit.
