Polymer Blends and Composites

Most polymers are incompatible with one another; therefore most binary polymer blends are two-phase systems. The properties of such blends are functions not only of the chemical structure of the polymers, but also of the phase morphology. The blends usually assume a reasonably fine morphology when incompatible components are mixed mechanically.

Polymer blends and composites are widely used in science and industry. The spectrum of properties blends and composites is wider than that of pure polymers. There is an economic aspect also: Sometimes fillers of polymers are inexpensive, so the output of manufacture is higher per employed pure material if fillers or blends are used.
