The Role of Ports in Supply Chains

4.1Definition “Ports”

In a very general way, the globally recognized maritime expert and lecturer Professor Gerhardt Muller35 defines the term “port” as: “a harbor or haven where ships may anchor, or a harbor area with marine terminal facilities for transferring cargo/passengers between ships and land transportation.” In this definition the word “marine” may imply that a port is a territorial unit established on a coastline, that is, located more or less directly at the open sea.
