Q: “What will your AI do for your customers?”

A: “It will provide them with insights.”

If we had a dollar for every time a startup founder gave that answer to mentors at the Creative Destruction Lab, we’d be rich.

Insights is a trigger word for us because it represents precisely the wrong way of thinking about how an AI advance will create value. For a new AI prediction, “insights” is code for “we don’t know what to do with that prediction.”

The correct response would be to outline the decision that the prediction will improve. AI only has value if it leads to better decision-making. And this means that the new opportunities for value creation from AI are all about how they improve decisions.
