17.1 Introduction
e term “power supply” refers to power conversion systems in the following categories: (1) AC-DC
rectiers, which are usually single- or three-phase active rectiers; (2) DC-DC converters, which are
buck, boost, or buck–boost-derived converters in hard or so-switched (resonant converters) opera-
tion; and (3) DC-AC inverters, e.g., uninterruptible powers supplies (UPS), AC power sources, and
motor drives. Recent applications have opened up new categories of power supplies such as electronic
ballasts, pulsating power supplies, and high-voltage capacitor charging power supplies.
