15.1 Matrix Converters
15.1.1 Introduction
e matrix (or direct) converter oers “a more silicon solution” for AC/AC power conversion. e topol-
ogy consists of an array of bidirectional switches arranged so that any of the output lines of the con-
verter can be connected to any of the input lines. Figure 15.1 shows a typical three-phase to three-phase
matrix converter, with nine bidirectional switches. e switches allow any input phase to be connected
to any output phase. e output waveform is then created using a suitable pulse width modulation
(PWM) pattern similar to a normal inverter, except that the input is a three-phase supply
