Coal provides around 40% of the world's electricity, more than any other source. Most modern coal-fired power stations burn pulverised coal in a boiler to raise steam for a steam turbine. High efficiency is achieved by using supercritical boilers made of advanced alloys that produce high steam temperatures and large, high-efficiency steam turbines. Alternatives types of coal-fired power plants include fluidized bed boilers which can burn a variety of poor fuels as well as coal gasifiers which allow coal to be turned into a combustible gas which can be burnt in a gas turbine.
