Combining high performance with low power consumption is one of the primary goals
of portable devices. Historically developers have relied on Doze, Sleep, and Hibernate
modes for conserving power in processors. However, an increasing number of system
vendors, like Freescale, ARM, Intel, AMD, Transmeta, NSC, Texas Instruments, and
others, have developed systems approaches that take advantage of the fact that reducing
the frequency and voltage can yield approximately a quadratic decrease in energy used.
