10. Basic System Functions and Description of ASH Handling

Coal-based thermal power plants require a huge amount of coal to be burnt as a part of continuous process and the consequence is the production of ash, also in a considerable amount and continuously as well. The ash thus produced demands immediate removal to ward off associated hazards caused by its accumulation. A very rough figure suggests that ∼200 tons/hr (TPH) of ash production is very likely in a 2 × 250 MW plant using only indigenous coal. The actual quantity, of course, depends on several factors (e.g., gross calorific value, ash content, and other analysis values of the coal received). A brief overview of an ash-handling system is presented in Figure II/10.5.
