Sometimes it is desirable to turn off a section of the product but leave other
portions operating. This is typically the case in laptop computers for power
savings or consumer appliance applications, such as CRT monitors, televisions,
and stereo equipment.
Many consumer appliances must place themselves in the standby mode when
the user has walked away from the product. This type of operation is called
“green certified.” This certification dictates that the product must use less than
5 watts of power while in the standby mode. The switching power supply alone
