Stationary lead–acid accumulator batteries (ABs) are the most important component of auxiliary DC power supply systems at substations and power plants. In Russia, the availability of ABs at substations is compulsory for voltage rates of 110 kV and higher, whereas in many Western countries an AB is the most important part of substations of all classes. Unfortunately, multiple regulatory documents—operational manuals and standards—cannot answer a number of questions that arise when working with ABs.
