Abstract

The chapter reviews fundamental nonlinear acoustic phenomena in fluids, which play an important role in current applications of sound waves in power ultrasonics. Physical processes initiated by an intense acoustic wave in a classical thermoviscous fluid are analyzed in terms of the activation and interaction of three modes of response of a perturbed fluid: vorticity generation, acoustic oscillations, and entropic dissipation.
