Abstract

The importance of bubble dynamics in acoustic cavitation of sound-irradiated liquids is emphasized. Starting from a discussion of cavitation thresholds, the oscillation of single, spherical bubbles in sound fields is described for various parameters (sound pressure amplitude, bubble radius, and acoustic frequency), including response curves and habitat diagrams. High-speed photographic observations of single bubbles and bubble ensembles (clusters, filaments, double layers, and cones) are reported, as well as their acoustic and optical emissions.
