Summary

VLDBs present problems for both query performance and database maintenance. Partitioning can help in both areas. You can mark relational partitions as read-only and bypass subsequent lengthy backup cycles for those partitions. Also, index maintenance can now be performed online, increasing the availability of the database. For Analysis Services databases, you can restrict processing to the partition containing the most recent data, improving the time to data availability and reducing resource consumption.
