6CLASSICAL MACHINE LEARNING
It’s satisfying to be able to write “Classical Machine Learning” as it implies that there is something newer that makes older techniques “classical.” Of course, we know by now that there is—deep learning—and we’ll get to it in the chapters that follow. But first, we need to build our intuition by examining older techniques that will help cement concepts for us and, frankly, because the older techniques are still useful when the situation warrants.
It’s tempting to include some sort of history here. To keep to the practical nature of this book, we won’t, but a full history of machine learning is needed, and as of this ...
