8.13. The Phase Contrast Image

Phase contrast images have an appearance that is easily interpreted by those who are used to looking at stained samples. Objects display variations in intensity and increased contrast. However, artifacts can result from a phase image, the most common being the phase halo. In positive phase images, there may be a peripheral bright region that obscures fine details at the border of an object. In negative phase images, this halo appears dark.
