Purchasing used microscopes has its place and value. If you wish to obtain a research-grade microscope and save money, the best recourse is to buy used. Options range from modern stands that are still in production to older stands that have been discontinued for several decades. With the former, you get all the advantages of a new microscope, provided it is in good repair and supported by the vendor. However, the savings in cost can be quite modest, reflecting the high demand for a desirable instrument. Finding such microscopes can be difficult.
