CHAPTER 2Getting Started

After reading through the first chapter, you should know why JRuby and Rails are interesting for you. In this chapter we'll walk through what needs to be done to get started using these technologies. I'll talk you through how to install JRuby, using both the source and binary distribution; how to test your resulting JRuby installation; and how to install all the software you'll need in the rest of the book.

I'll briefly introduce RubyGems (the main Ruby package installation tool) and walk through installing all the Gems used in the book. We'll do this right now so you won't have to begin each chapter reading instructions on how to install the required Gems. I'll give a small introduction to each package we install too, ...
