“You are, my Queen,” replied the mirror, in a reassuring, resonant voice.

What man or woman wouldn’t love to gaze into the mirror every day and be so validated? Imagine feeling so superior that you could go about your day with an unquestioned sense of your own wonderfulness? And yet, a mirror like that may be closer to self-deception than a reflection of any kind of reality. In fact, self-deception may be closer to what we use to judge ourselves—when it comes to our behavior, our relationships—even our money!
