Sometimes we don’t want to face ourselves and admit that we made a loan to the wrong party. We call it a gift, and then we can absolve ourselves of poor judgment. But was it really a gift, or did we make a poor choice about the person to whom we made the loan? If you decide to reject Shakespeare’s advice, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be,” at least be a careful lender who discriminates perceptively among potential borrowers.
