perceptron model. Because of the book's mathematical rigor, and also
because the authors were very well known and respected researchers
in artificial intelligence, a shadow was cast on neural network
research. Soon after, in 1971, Frank Rosenblatt died in a boating
accident. Without his support, and in the wake of Perceptions, money
for neural network research rapidly dwindled.
During the ensuing years, a few pioneers continued studying
neural models, developing much interesting theory but having little
