Defuzzification
Sometimes fuzziness just is not good enough. We need a crisp number.
A valve actuator cannot be expected to understand a fuzzy member-
ship function such as that in graph 3b of Figure
17.13.
It needs to
know in numerical terms how much to open the valve. The process of
selecting a single optimal point from the domain of a fuzzy member-
ship function is called defuzzification.
Before attempting to defuzzify or otherwise use a fuzzy
resultant, we should try to ascertain its validity. Perhaps the rule
base and/or primitive membership functions are less than excellent.
