UNIX provides great flexibility in allowing jobs to run automatically, based either on system events or on time and date. Some of these mechanisms are only for the root user (system administrator), but many of them can be used by all users. The following sections describe the most common functions that can be performed by the root user only.
The root user (only) can customize and add to the jobs that are run automatically at system bootup. Some systems use the System V method; others (even some SVR4 systems) use the BSD method.
