If you have multiple people working on a project, they will all be making changes and committing to the repository. Doing an update gets these changes from the repository and incorporates them into your working copy. It’s a good idea to update fairly frequently; if you haven’t updated for a while, then fixing any conflicts will take more time. You’ll learn how to deal with conflicts in Task 18, Handling Conflicts. If you have made changes in your working copy, it’s still safe to do an update—Subversion will incorporate the changes from the repository with your changes; it won’t just overwrite or throw away all your hard work!
