  • Of the 17 Lok Sabha elections held thus far, Congress has been the single largest party 11 times (in 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1971, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 2004 and 2009), BJP 5 times (in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2014 and 2019) and Janata Party once (in 1977).
  • In ten of the seventeen Lok Sabha elections held thus far, the single largest party got a clear majority (more than 50% of the seats) on its own. There was a period from 1989 till 2009 in which the largest party was never large enough to get a clear majority on its own.

    It happened 2 times (in 1989 and 1996) in our democracy that the largest party had to sit in the opposition!
