IN THE WINTER OF 1984, Jim let me know that he was resigning as secretary of IPPNW and would bow out of the leadership. He indicated being under pressure from his boss, Dr. Eugene Braunwald, chief of medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, to concentrate on his research. In addition, he wanted to devote energy to Senator Gary Hart’s presidential election campaign in the Democratic primaries. He had established good connections with the candidate. Jim confided that if Hart prevailed, there was a good chance he might appoint Jim to be the next US ambassador to the Soviet Union.
