HOW TO DEVELOP A CORPORATE DATA MODEL

I have identified three possible approaches to the development of a corporate data model: a bottom-up approach that I call ‘attribute trawling’; the joining of multiple project or area data models; and a top-down approach to the development of a single model.

Attribute-trawling approach

This approach involves studying all the existing information systems, collecting the data definitions from those systems (which are probably not documented, so will need to be extracted from the schema definitions held by the database management system) and, once all the definitions are collected, sorting them out so that good, reusable definitions are obtained.
