5: Tribology of metals and alloys
Abstract
The chapter introduces and discusses the tribology of metallic materials and their alloys. Friction and wear of cast iron and iron-based alloys were remarked emphasizing the role of carbon content and the effect of hardness and nitriding. The present chapter will briefly cover the tribology of copper, brass, and aluminum. A focus is to understand some characteristic phenomena associated with friction and wear of alloys including magnesium-, titanium-, tin-, and nickel-based alloys. The discussion then turns toward highlighting the friction and wear of metal matrix composites MMCs.
