10: Practical applications of tribology
Abstract
This chapter has been devoted to giving a review of different practical applications of tribology. Various types of bearings are defined, and gears are presented as examples of machine elements. Machining processes are also discussed emphasizing cutting tools and cutting fluids. Various automotive components are covered including friction materials, clutches, brakes, piston-ring, valvetrain mechanism, cam mechanism, and crankshaft bearing. The tribological considerations of engine oils, gear oils, and transmission fluids are addressed. Applications of tribology in biomedicals and MEMS/NEMS are also considered. The chapter emphasizes the fundamental role of surface coatings in the protection ...
