Privacy in online social networks is a very young field that studies what constitutes an unauthorized disclosure in social networks and how to protect sensitive user information. In this part, we provide the necessary background for the synthesis lecture. We begin by presenting a simplified social network model in Chapter 2. Then, we discuss the sensitive information that can be potentially (inadvertently) disclosed in Chapter 3. We introduce a framework for describing information disclosure in online social networks by formally defining four types of privacy breaches: identity disclosure, attribute disclosure, social link disclosure, and affiliation link disclosure.
