Chapter 2. The Importance of Privacy-Enhancing and Privacy-Aware Technologies
Privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs, not to be confused with the household variety) and privacy-aware technologies (PATs) are new concepts for most people. However, the term PET is not really new.[1] Not only is the term PET an established one, there are even workshops that focus on PETs.[2] At least one book has been written devoted to designing PETs.[3] Privacy-enhancing technologies are solutions whose specific purpose is to help consumers and companies to protect their privacy. It also includes those technologies that permit developers, solution providers, and service companies to add privacy enhancements to their solutions.
